Under the direction of Andy Fickman, Playing With Fire is the perfect family movie. The movie’s storyline provides a nice balance between the real life pressures that come along with rearing kids and having a family, with just the right amount of humor. When straight-laced fire superintendent Jake Carson (John Cena) and his elite team of firefighters (Keegan-Michael Key, John Leguizamo, and Tyler Mane) come to the rescue of three precocious siblings: 16-year old Brynn (Brianna Hildebrand), 10-year old Will (Christian Convery) and nearly 4-year old Zoey (Finley Rose Slater), they all quickly realize that children are unpredictable. Though big in stature and skilled at extinguishing wild fires, these firemen and highly trained smokejumpers come to learn that having kids around the fire depot has its perks, but that this particular task will not be that easy.

As their lives, jobs and depot get turned upside down, they all come to learn the power of embracing vulnerability, the positive effects of having a family and embrace the notion that having kids around may not always provide the most perfect circumstances, but that once kids are in your life—it’s hard to imagine your life without them.

There are many positive kid-friendly and family-centric themes within the movie such as: not taking having a family for granted, the ideal that kids can soften your heart, and there’s a sub-narrative on the possibilities of adoption. Additionally, adult viewers as well as children get to get a glimpse inside of a fire depot, learn about the different types of fire fighters, and learn about some of the training techniques that firefighters apply when training. This movie will provide a wonderful opportunity to discuss fire safety with your children as well.
